Questions about body work
Bodywork is more than working on muscles.
At The House of Obba, bodywork is a conversation with the body. It is an opportunity to listen, restore movement, regulate the nervous system, and support your body's natural ability to heal.
Every session is personalized to your needs and may include therapeutic massage, fascia work, stretching, cupping, moxibustion, auricular acupuncture, breath awareness, or other traditional techniques depending on your treatment plan.
No two sessions are exactly alike because no two people are exactly alike.

How is your bodywork different from a traditional massage?
Most massage focuses on relieving muscle tension.
While relieving tension is certainly one goal, we also ask why that tension developed in the first place.
Stress, repetitive movement, old injuries, emotional experiences, posture, breathing patterns, and daily habits all influence how the body holds tension.
Our sessions combine modern knowledge of anatomy and physiology with traditional healing practices that recognize the connection between the body, emotions, nervous system, and environment.
Rather than chasing symptoms, we work to understand the patterns contributing to discomfort and create a treatment plan that supports lasting change.
What happens during my first appointment?
Your first visit begins with a conversation.
We'll discuss your health history, current concerns, goals, lifestyle, previous injuries, and any questions you may have.
This intake allows us to understand not only where you're experiencing discomfort, but also how your body has adapted over time.
From there, we'll develop a treatment plan together.
Your comfort level, schedule, financial goals, and commitment to care are all part of that conversation.Healing is collaborative, and your treatment plan should reflect your life—not just your symptoms.
Will bodywork hurt?
There is an important difference between discomfort and pain.
Some techniques, particularly those addressing long-held tension or restricted fascia, may create moments of discomfort. However, bodywork should never feel overwhelming or unsafe.
Throughout your session, we work closely together to stay at the edge of therapeutic discomfort without crossing into pain.
Your feedback is always welcome, and you are encouraged to speak up at any point during treatment.
Healing happens best when your nervous system feels safe.
Do I have to undress?
Different techniques require different levels of access to the body.
Before every session, we'll discuss what techniques are recommended and what level of clothing works best for your comfort.
You are always encouraged to undress only to the level that feels comfortable for you.
Professional draping is used throughout every session to protect your privacy and dignity.Your comfort and sense of safety are always priorities.
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily.
Depending on your treatment plan, you may remain fully clothed for portions of your session, particularly when incorporating stretching, movement, or certain bodywork techniques.
If your session includes massage or other techniques requiring direct skin contact, we'll discuss this during your intake and explain what to expect before treatment begins.
How many sessions will I need?
Every person's healing journey is different.
The number of sessions depends on several factors, including:
-
Your goals
-
How long you've been experiencing symptoms
-
Your overall healthYour schedule
-
Your financial investment
-
Your willingness to practice recommendations between visits
Rather than recommending a predetermined number of appointments, we create a treatment plan together and adjust it as your body responds.
Healing is a process, not a race.
Can bodywork help with stress?
Yes.
One of the most common ways the body responds to ongoing stress is by creating tension.
You may notice this as:
-
Jaw clenching
-
Tight shoulders
-
Neck pain
-
Headaches
-
Shallow breathing
-
Difficulty relaxing
-
Feeling "stuck" in your body
Bodywork can help interrupt these patterns by encouraging relaxation, improving circulation, restoring movement, and supporting nervous system regulation.
Many clients report feeling calmer, sleeping better, and becoming more aware of how stress shows up in their bodies.
Can bodywork help chronic pain?
Many people living with chronic pain find bodywork to be a valuable part of their wellness plan.
While we cannot promise specific outcomes or cure medical conditions, bodywork may help reduce muscular tension, improve mobility, support healthy movement patterns, and increase body awareness.
Our goal is to help you move with greater comfort while developing practical strategies that support long-term well-being.
What if I'm nervous?
Feeling nervous before your first appointment is completely normal.
Many people come to us after months—or even years—of living with pain, stress, or uncertainty.
Our first priority is creating an environment where you feel heard, respected, and comfortable.
Nothing happens without your consent.
Questions are always welcome.
Your treatment plan is developed with you, not for you.
Healing begins with trust, and we take that responsibility seriously.
What techniques might be included in my treatment?
Depending on your needs, your session may include one or more traditional therapeutic techniques, including:
-
Therapeutic massage
-
Fascia-focused bodywork
-
Stretch therapy
-
Cupping
-
Moxibustion
-
Auricular acupuncture
-
Breath awareness
-
Movement education
Every treatment is individualized.
Rather than following a routine, we select the techniques that best support your goals and comfort level.
