Frequently Asked Questions About The House of Obba

Welcome!

Whether you've discovered The House of Obba through a friend, a community event, or while searching for a different approach to wellness, welcome.

We understand that exploring traditional medicine, herbal healing, and bodywork can bring up a lot of questions. Our goal is to create a space where curiosity is encouraged, education is part of the healing process, and every person feels empowered to make informed decisions about their own well-being.

Below you'll find answers to some of our most frequently asked questions about our philosophy, approach, and the work we do.

What is The House of Obba?

The House of Obba is a modern healing house rooted in traditional medicine. We bring together herbal medicine, therapeutic bodywork, auricular acupuncture, ritual, education, and community to support the whole person—body, mind, emotions, and spirit. While many wellness practices focus on treating symptoms, our work begins with a different question:

What is your body trying to communicate?

Every service, handcrafted herbal remedy, educational program, and community gathering is designed to help you better understand yourself and develop practical skills that support long-term well-being.The House of Obba exists to preserve traditional healing knowledge while making it accessible and meaningful in today's world.

What makes The House of Obba different?

Healing is not something that is done to you.

It is something you actively participate in.

Many wellness practices focus on providing relief. While relief is important, we believe lasting change happens when people understand what is happening in their bodies and learn how to care for themselves beyond a single appointment.

At The House of Obba, every appointment is an opportunity to learn.

You'll leave with more than a treatment. You'll leave with greater awareness, practical tools, and a deeper understanding of how your body, emotions, environment, and daily habits influence your health.

Our mission is not to create lifelong patients. Our mission is to help people become confident stewards of their own healing.

What do you mean by "traditional medicine"?

Traditional medicine refers to healing practices that have been passed from one generation to the next through lived experience, observation, mentorship, and community.

Many of the methods used at The House of Obba come from healing traditions that have supported people for hundreds—and in some cases thousands—of years.

These traditions include herbal medicine, Curanderismo, Traditional Chinese Medicine principles, bodywork, ritual practices, and other systems of care rooted in relationship—with the body, the natural world, and community.

Modern scientific research continues to explore and validate many practices that traditional healers have relied upon for centuries. We believe these two perspectives can complement one another, allowing us to honor ancestral wisdom while remaining thoughtful, curious, and informed by current knowledge.

What does it mean to become a steward of your own healing?

This idea is at the heart of everything we do.

A steward is someone who cares for, protects, and takes responsibility for something of value.

We believe your health deserves that same kind of care.

Our role is not to heal you.Our role is to guide, educate, demonstrate, and share traditional knowledge so you can make informed choices about your own well-being.

Healing is shaped by the decisions you make each day—how you move, how you rest, what you nourish yourself with, how you respond to stress, and how you cultivate relationships with yourself, your community, and the natural world.

Our hope is that every client leaves with greater confidence, not greater dependence.

Who are your services designed for?

The House of Obba welcomes adults who are looking for a thoughtful, educational, and holistic approach to wellness.

Many of our clients come to us because they are experiencing:

  • Chronic stress or burnout

  • Persistent muscle tension or chronic pain

  • Grief or major life transitions

  • Nervous system dysregulation

  • Curiosity about herbal medicine

  • Interest in traditional healing practices

  • A desire to reconnect with ancestral wisdom

  • A longing for a stronger sense of community

You do not need prior experience with herbal medicine, bodywork, or spiritual practices to benefit from our services.Curiosity is enough.

Do I need to follow a particular spiritual tradition?

No.

People from many different backgrounds, beliefs, and life experiences are welcome at The House of Obba.

While Alexis' personal practice is rooted in the Lucumí tradition and informed by years of study in traditional healing systems, all services are offered with respect for each client's individual beliefs and comfort level.

You are never expected to participate in rituals or spiritual practices that do not align with your own values.Healing begins with trust, and honoring your personal boundaries is part of that process.

Why do you place so much emphasis on education?

Because education is medicine.

When we understand our bodies, we begin making different choices.

Learning how stress affects the nervous system, how herbs support the body, why movement matters, or how our daily habits influence our health gives us the ability to participate more fully in our own healing.

Knowledge creates possibility.

Every workshop, consultation, bodywork session, and community event is designed to help you leave with greater understanding than when you arrived. Our goal is not simply to provide a service.

Our goal is to help you build knowledge and confidence that stays with you long after your appointment has ended.

How do traditional healing and modern science work together?

At The House of Obba, we do not see traditional wisdom and modern science as opposing ideas.

Traditional medicine is built upon generations of careful observation and practical experience. Modern science provides tools to better understand why many of these approaches work and how they affect the body.

Rather than choosing one perspective over the other, we believe each has something valuable to contribute. This balanced approach allows us to honor tradition while remaining committed to thoughtful, evidence-informed care.

Is The House of Obba a spa?

No.

While many people experience deep relaxation during bodywork sessions, our work extends beyond relaxation alone.

Our services are rooted in therapeutic bodywork, herbal medicine, education, and traditional healing practices that support long-term wellness.

Every appointment begins with listening.

Together, we develop an approach that reflects your goals, your comfort level, and your unique circumstances.

What do you hope people experience here?

More than anything, we hope people leave feeling safe.

From that foundation, healing can begin.

We hope you leave understanding your body a little better.

We hope you discover practical tools that support your health.

We hope you reconnect with traditions that remind you healing has always existed within families and communities.

Most importantly, we hope you leave believing that you are capable of participating in your own healing journey

.Because healing is not a destination. It is a lifelong practice of learning, caring, and growing—and you don't have to walk that path alone.
